  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (or a mix of beef & pork)
  • 1 can (28 oz / 800 g) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon chili flakes (optional)
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese (or cottage cheese)
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Pinch of salt & pepper
  • 912 lasagna noodles (boiled or no-boil, depending on type)
  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Extra Parmesan for topping

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet. Add onion and cook until soft.
  2. Stir in garlic and ground beef; cook until browned.
  3. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, and seasonings.
  4. Simmer 20–25 minutes until thickened.
  5. In a bowl, mix ricotta, egg, Parmesan, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease and line a tall round baking dish or springform pan.
  7. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce at the bottom.
  8. Layer noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, and mozzarella.
  9. Repeat until you reach the top, finishing with mozzarella and Parmesan.
  10. Cover with foil (tenting so cheese doesn’t stick) and bake 35 minutes.
  11. Remove foil, bake another 15–20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  12. Rest 15 minutes before slicing to hold layers together.
