Description

A delicious and spicy pasta dish featuring penne pasta, Italian sausage, and fresh basil.


Ingredients

  • 12 oz penne pasta
  • 1 lb spicy Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook penne pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. While the pasta cooks, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
  3. Add the spicy Italian sausage to the skillet. Break up the sausage with a spoon and cook until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes.
  4. Stir in the crushed tomatoes and red pepper flakes. Simmer for 8-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  5. Add the cooked pasta to the skillet, tossing to coat in the sauce. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  6. Remove from heat. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and chopped fresh basil before serving.

Notes

  • For a milder dish, you can reduce the amount of red pepper flakes.
  • This recipe can be easily doubled to serve a larger crowd.
