Description

A spooky and delicious recipe for Haunted Poison Skull Candy Apples, perfect for Halloween festivities.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best)
  • 6 wooden sticks or skewers
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup light corn syrup
  • ¾ cup water
  • ½ tsp black gel food coloring (or more for intense color)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup white candy melts (or white chocolate)
  • Skull candy molds (or use a piping bag for freehand design)
  • Black ribbon (for tying around sticks, optional but creepy-cute 🎀)

Instructions

  1. Prepare apples: Wash apples thoroughly to remove wax coating (dip in hot water, then dry well). Insert wooden sticks firmly into the center of each apple. Line a tray with parchment paper and lightly grease.
  2. Make the candy coating: In a heavy-bottom saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Heat over medium-high until mixture reaches 300°F (150°C) (hard crack stage) on a candy thermometer. Remove from heat, add black food coloring and vanilla, stir gently (avoid bubbles). Working quickly, dip each apple into the black candy mixture, swirling to coat completely. Place on prepared tray to harden.
  3. Make the skull decorations: Melt white candy melts according to package directions. Pour into skull molds, tap out air bubbles, and let set until firm. If you don’t have molds: pipe skull shapes directly onto parchment with melted white candy and let harden. Once set, carefully remove skulls from molds.
  4. Assemble: Attach skull decorations to the cooled black candy apples with a little extra melted white chocolate. Tie black ribbons around sticks for a haunting finish.

Notes

  • Ensure apples are completely dry before dipping.
  • Use a candy thermometer for accurate temperature.
  • Be cautious when handling hot sugar mixture.
  • Customize the skull designs as desired.
