Description

Delightful recipe for creamy Swedish-style meatballs with mushrooms, featuring golden meatballs in a velvety cream sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500 g ground beef (or half pork, half beef)
  • 1 small onion, finely minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup milk or cream
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • ½ tsp ground allspice
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil (for browning)
  • 2 tbsp butter (for sauce)
  • 250 g mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (for sauce)
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (for sauce)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix together ground beef, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire, Dijon, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Gently combine—do not overmix. Roll into meatballs (about 1 to 1 ½ inches).
  2. Heat butter/oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides until golden. Remove and set aside (they will finish cooking in the sauce).
  3. In the same pan, melt 2 tbsp butter. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until softened and lightly golden. Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and stir for 30 seconds.
  4. Slowly pour in the beef broth, stirring to remove lumps. Add cream, Worcestershire, Dijon, and stir. Simmer 3–4 minutes until sauce thickens slightly.
  5. Add the meatballs back into the pan. Cover and simmer gently for 10 minutes, until meatballs are fully cooked and tender. Taste and adjust salt/pepper.
  6. Sprinkle with fresh parsley. Serve warm with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, buttered rice, or lingonberry jam for an authentic Swedish touch.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, use ground turkey instead of beef.
  • Serve with traditional Swedish sides for an authentic experience.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
