Description

A delicious and visually stunning Classic Red Velvet Layer Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting, perfect for any celebration.


Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring (liquid or gel)
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 16 oz (450 g) cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup (115 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch (20 cm) round cake pans and line bottoms with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  3. In a large bowl, mix together oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the dry mixture into the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  5. Divide batter evenly among prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove and cool completely on wire racks.
  8. Beat cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy.
  9. Add vanilla extract.
  10. Gradually beat in powdered sugar until fluffy and spreadable.
  11. Place one cooled cake layer on a serving plate. Spread an even layer of frosting.
  12. Repeat with second and third cake layers.
  13. Frost the outside of the cake completely.
  14. Decorate with swirls of frosting and red velvet crumbs.
