Ingredients

  • ½ cup (120ml) milk or buttermilk
  • ⅓ cup (70g) brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 4 oz (115g) cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup (60g) butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups (180g) powdered sugar
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp milk or cream (adjust for texture)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes).
  4. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
  5. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk until smooth.
  6. Mix brown sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter in a small bowl.
  7. Fill each cupcake liner halfway with batter.
  8. Add 1 tsp of cinnamon swirl mixture in the center and gently swirl with a toothpick.
  9. Top with more batter until ¾ full.
  10. Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  11. Cool completely before frosting.
  12. Beat cream cheese and butter together until creamy.
  13. Add powdered sugar and vanilla; beat until smooth and fluffy.
  14. Add milk to reach desired consistency.
  15. Pipe the frosting in a swirl pattern to resemble a cinnamon roll.
  16. Lightly dust with cinnamon or cocoa powder for that classic bakery look.
