Description

These mesmerizing candy apples feature a jet-black glossy coating with hypnotic purple swirls. Crunchy on the outside and juicy inside, they’re equal parts eerie and elegant — a perfect showstopper for spooky season!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best)
  • 6 wooden sticks or black decorative skewers
  • Warm water + white vinegar (for cleaning)
  • 2 cups (400 g) granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup (180 ml) light corn syrup
  • ½ cup (120 ml) water
  • ½ tsp black gel food coloring
  • ¼ tsp purple gel food coloring (optional, for swirls)
  • ½ tsp candy flavoring (optional — try blackberry, grape, or vanilla)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Wash apples thoroughly in warm water with a splash of vinegar to remove wax coating. Dry completely and insert sticks into the top of each apple. Set aside on a parchment-lined tray.
  2. Cook the Candy: In a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir gently until sugar dissolves, then stop stirring. Bring mixture to a boil over medium-high heat and cook until it reaches 300°F (149°C) on a candy thermometer (hard crack stage). Remove from heat immediately.
  3. Add Color & Flavor: Quickly add black gel coloring and stir just once or twice for a marbled look. For the swirl effect: lightly drizzle a bit of purple gel coloring into the pot and swirl gently — don’t mix completely. Add flavoring oil if using, and gently swirl again.
  4. Dip the Apples: Working quickly, tilt the pot and dip each apple, swirling to coat evenly. Let excess drip off, then place on a parchment-lined tray to harden. Allow 10–15 minutes to set completely.

Notes

  • Ensure apples are completely dry before dipping to achieve a smooth coating.
  • Use a candy thermometer for accurate temperature measurement.
  • Experiment with different flavorings for unique variations.
