Description

These hauntingly beautiful Black Poison Candy Apples are glossy, mysterious, and perfect for Halloween or gothic-themed parties. Beneath the crisp black candy shell lies a juicy apple, balancing tartness and sweetness in every bite. Simple to make, irresistibly dramatic to serve.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 small to medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • Wooden or black decorative sticks
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup light corn syrup
  • ¾ cup water
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp black gel food coloring (use gel for the deepest shine)
  • Optional: 1–2 drops of purple food gel for depth
  • Optional shimmer: ½ tsp edible black glitter or luster dust

Instructions

  1. Prep the apples: Wash apples well to remove wax coating (dip in hot water with vinegar, then dry completely). Insert sticks firmly into the tops and set on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  2. Make the candy syrup: In a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir just until sugar dissolves, then bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Do not stir once boiling — simply swirl the pan occasionally. Heat until the mixture reaches 300°F (150°C) (hard crack stage) on a candy thermometer.
  3. Add color and flavor: Remove from heat and carefully stir in vanilla extract and black food coloring. Mix until fully combined and glossy. For shimmer, add edible black glitter or a small pinch of silver luster dust and stir once.
  4. Dip the apples: Working quickly, dip each apple into the hot syrup, tilting and rotating to coat evenly. Let excess drip off, then place on parchment to cool and harden for about 15–20 minutes.
  5. Finishing touches: Optional: Dust with more edible glitter for a “poison sparkle” effect. For a smoky look, add subtle white streaks using a clean food-safe brush and diluted white food color once set.

Notes

  • Ensure apples are completely dry before dipping to achieve a smooth coating.
  • Use a candy thermometer for accurate temperature measurement.
  • Be cautious when handling hot syrup to avoid burns.
