Key Ingredients for Air Fryer Tuna Melt

Tuna: The star of this air fryer tuna melt is undoubtedly the tuna. I recommend using canned tuna packed in water for a lighter, flakier texture. Opt for brands that are sustainably sourced to support ocean conservation while enjoying a delicious meal. If you prefer a bit of a saltier flavor, consider using tuna packed in oil.

Bread: The choice of bread can make all the difference. I love using sourdough for its delightful crust and tangy flavor, but any hearty bread can work wonders. Just ensure it’s thick enough to hold the creamy filling without getting soggy.

Cheese: Cheese is essential for that melty goodness. I usually go for sharp cheddar for its bold flavor, but feel free to mix it up with mozzarella or pepper jack for extra spice!

Mayonnaise: A smooth spread is crucial to bind the filling together. Regular or light mayonnaise works perfectly, offering a creaminess that enhances each bite.

Vegetables: Adding diced celery and onion brings a satisfying crunch and flavor depth. These little bits elevate your air fryer tuna melt to a whole new level.

Tips for Making the Perfect Air Fryer Tuna Melt

Creating a delightful air fryer tuna melt is all about balancing flavors and textures while embracing the ease of air frying. Picture this: the crispy, golden exterior giving way to a warm, cheesy tuna filling. Here are my top tips to ensure your melt turns out perfect every time.

Choose Quality Tuna

When it comes to the star of the dish, selecting high-quality tuna makes a significant difference. I recommend using tuna packed in water for a lighter flavor or tuna packed in olive oil for a richer taste that seals in moisture. Either way, fresh and premium ingredients will elevate your air fryer tuna melt.

Mix in Flavor Boosters

Don’t shy away from customizing your tuna mix! Adding chopped celery, red onion, or dill not only enhances the taste but also adds a nice crunch. A dash of hot sauce or a squeeze of lemon can brighten the overall flavor, making each bite even more delicious.

Toast the Bread First

A little pre-emptive strike never hurt! Lightly toasting your bread inside the air fryer for a few minutes before adding the filling helps create that perfect crispy crust, ensuring it won’t turn soggy during the cooking process.

Keep an Eye on Cooking Time

Air fryers can be a bit unpredictable. Begin with a cooking time of around 8-10 minutes, but check regularly to avoid over-browning. You want a beautifully melted cheese topping with a golden crust.

Description

Delicious tuna melts made with tuna packed in olive oil, dill pickle relish, and melted mozzarella cheese, all served on toasted pita bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 5 oz. can tuna packed in olive oil (see notes)
  • 2 pita breads (see notes)
  • 2 T dill pickle relish (see notes)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 3 T mayo (more or less to taste)
  • fresh-ground black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup grated mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat Air Fryer (or oven) to 400F/200C while you prepare the tuna.
  2. Drain the tuna in a colander in the sink. (Catch the oil and discard if you use tuna packed in olive oil.)
  3. Finely chop enough red onion to make 1/4 cup.
  4. Mix drained tuna, chopped red onion, dill pickle relish (or chopped pickles), mayo, and a little black pepper.
  5. Put one piece of pita bread in the Air Fryer basket and toast for 40 seconds, then turn it over and toast for another 40 seconds.
  6. Spread half the tuna mixture on the toasted pita bread.
  7. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of grated mozzarella cheese over the tuna mixture.
  8. Put the pita topped with tuna and cheese back in the air fryer basket and cook until the cheese is completely melted and the mixture is hot, just slightly over a minute for the Air Fryer.
  9. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • This recipe uses my favorite Genova Tuna Packed in Olive Oil (affiliate link), but feel free to use any tuna you prefer.
  • You can chop a dill pickle instead of using dill pickle relish if you don’t have relish on hand.
  • Different Air Fryer models might take slightly more or less time, so you may have to test to see how much time you need; you want the pita bread firm but not starting to brown much at this point.
